PLAQUES!
MARKERS! SIGNS!
Ohio's
Bi-Centennial plans are daily more visible - from Ohio Barns and prints of
Ohio Barns, to painted mailboxes, to Bi-Centennial bells to Galas, to
historic markers springing up everywhere. Pickaway County is making a
marvelous contribution! Circleville has 3 markers in place and several in
the planning stage. The Zieger marker at North Scioto and High Streets
commemorates the site where court was held before the octagonal courthouse
was built. It was also the site of the early Masonic meetings. A recent
marker, showing the town's pre-historic origin, stands outside the police
station in a small green space area on East Franklin Street. A third
marker honoring "Circleville's favorite son," Theodore Friedman (Ted
Lewis) is located in Ted Lewis Park with entrance on North Court Street.
The future will see more historic landmarks:
• The first of
12 signs delineating Circleville's Historic District was dedicated on
Saturday, May 17th, with a proclamation read by Roundtown Conservancy
president, Stuart Sharpnack. Roundtown Conservancy sponsored the signs,
but the real work was done by Louis McFarland and Mayor Ron Wunsch.
• The same day,
a handsome black bench honoring a former mayor, John Jenkins, was
dedicated by present mayor, Ron Wunsch. A commemoration was read by a
Jenkins family member. It sits beside the Circleville marker on East
Franklin Street.
• New State of
Ohio-shaped signs will replace and add to those erected in 1953.
• ODOT is
placing Underground Railroad signs along the route taken by slaves making
their bid for freedom. Local persons helped the coordinator, Cathy Nelson,
with the wording on the one to be placed in our county sometime this year.
• A sign near Second Baptist Church
memorializes a group of African American men who met to insist the local
politicians honor African American voting rights.
• Signs marking the Civil War's Camp
Circleville stand south of Circleville near Tarlton Road.
• A marker commemorating Cornstalk Town
and Grenadier Squaw Village is to be installed in October. It may then be
seen on Emerson Road.
• Logan Elm Park and Camp Charlotte
markers will be dedicated this month.
• Roundtown Conservancy is sponsoring a
Caleb Atwater marker which will appear in the small park area at the
corner of North Court and Pinckney Streets - the exact site of one of
Atwater's homes.
We are proud to sponsor such an important part of
Circleville's history.
